Do you think it's fair to base a large portion of your grade on one test?

It's finals week at my college right now and they're extremely stressful. For many of my courses the final is worth 30% of my final grade. Over a four day period I have to cram the entire semesters worth of vocabulary back into my head. As well as my professors freaking out about having to grade soo many papers at once.

Is it fair to base so much of students grades on one single test or paper? And is it fair to the professors to force them to give finals?

Feelings on finals?

You think that's bad? Try the final exam being 100% of the grade.

Oh wow, yes, I hate that part of finals. >< I like more classes where you write a lot of papers and responses all the way through so you can think more than in a 1.5 hour time limit.

I actually was a better test taker then anything in school so I never minded it, and I do believe that finals should be worth a significant amount of your grade about 30% is good, any more then that and I'd say it is unfair because the final should never make up for actually doing the work of the whole semester.

My point in saying it's fair is this. It's not enough to know you learned it the week it was discussed in class. The final is testing your ability to retain this information, and if you do get a good grade for retaining this information then it should mark you as a higher student. This is especially true if you are going for a higher profession that requires you retain information well (i.e doctor, lawyer, teacher).

If I can suggest any tips about tests of any kind, relax just a little (not entirely you still have to remain serious). A lot of the problems I've heard tend to be, because people get so flustered over the words, "test" and "exam" and how much it's going towards your grade that all the information just flutters away.

If you've done good all year, and you study good now you should have no problems. Don't let those words intimidate you. They are only words.

Might as well just clep the class then...

@Wren
My grades are good enough I can fail my final and still get in A or B+ my classes. I was just thinking on the subject in general, and of my math students who struggled so much with one test.

But when you're getting finals that are not cumulative it makes no sense. My economics final was just the last chapter on fiscal policy, only it just counted more.
And in subjects like math and physics the subject builds on itself.

Here on most of universities: you need to actually attend classes and pass all tests from them in order to be able to write final exam. Final exam is 100% of your grade. Yay.

I'm almost done with school now, but I remember sitting with all those anathomy, animal and plant physiology and genetics books, trying to learn to all finals at once 8D
School system should rely more on your practical skills, not pure theoretical informations. It's obvious you'll forget most of stuff fast, if you won't have any use from informations you learned.

That's just is ridiculous. You can clep courses here. It doesn't matter where it is, I cleped intro to engineering because it was a waste of my time to take it, and I get hired to tutor students for clep exams all the time, much cheaper for a subject you know. It's the only courses in my area at universities that have a test count for 100% of grades.

My final exams are 100% of my grade, most of the time. I think it is really stupid. Knowing everything for one day doesn't mean you'll know it your whole life. It would be far better to have tests regularly. But yea, we don't have a choice, do we ?

Our finals is actually 25% of our grade. Quarterly.
45% would be quizzes and performance tasks, and 30% would be everything else like recitation, worksheets, and seatworks.

Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad for me. I don't study much, but sometimes those big tests help me pull my grade up, but on the other hand, they can sometimes pull me down even further. It really depends. @_@

I don't get how just one test can be 100% of your grade...does that mean that all those quizzes and stuff are not graded at all?
I disappear for a week and yet it feels like forever. Why do such feelings linger within me?
