Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: Merrymaking
Description: First book in the Temeraire series. Dragons, Napoleonistic war, fantastic bond between humans & dragons
Opinion: My favorite books ever . Novik has a great writing style and a subject that's rather hard , but she did a fantastic job . It's set in the Napoleonistic war , but in an alternate universe where they have dragons . The rest is completely realistic , though . Contains lots of humor as well .

Genre: Fantasy
★Title: The Color of Magic (Discworld series)
Author: Terry Pratchett

Who recommends this: Merrymaking
Description: First book in the Discworld series. Completely senseless but you can't stop laughing your butt off. xD
Opinion: Pratchetts way of writing is the best I've ever come across. Every word is funny.
It's sometimes a little intricate , but that's because there's no logic at all . All characters seem to have some point of insanity , but what would you expect , on a disc-shaped flat world , located on the backs of four elephants , which stand on the back of a gigantic turtle

Genre: Fantasy, Alternate Reality

Opinion: The first one is my favorite, it's also the one which isn't very bloody. The others are more serious, they are in is an amazing world with so many interesting ideas. Cornelia Funke is sometimes called "the German J. K. Rowling".

Genre: Er, there are no dragons, but I guess Supernatural/Fantasy? I would say "Medieval" but they have guns. ._.

Genre:Fantasy

Author:Brian Jacques
Adult or Young Adult:Young Adult
Who recommends this: Featherquill
Description: Main characters are the Animals living in Redwall Abby. In every book, they defend the abby or their people. They are friendly folk, & make the most delicious sounding foods. Spiritual symbolism [however, the spiritual is not frequently mentioned.]
Opinion: Who doesn't like cute animals and delicious foods?

Genre: Fantasy
★Title: Rhapsody
Author: Elizabeth Haydon
Adult or Young Adult: Adult
Who recommends this: Lilicria
Description: A Singer trying to avoid an old lover who won't leave her alone bumps into two dangerous-looking characters who save her (if temporarily). Their rescue turns into a kidnapping and then they travel through the MIDDLE OF THE EARTH and even though this takes like a third of the book IS NOT BORING AT ALL. High fantasy, medieval, character-based plot.
Opinion: Miss Haydon is a brilliant fantasy writer, probably my current favourite adult fantasy writer. The characters are intricate and have their own distinct personalities while at the same time being easily recognizable archetypes of the fantasy genre. Wonderful poetic writing; and the prologue kept making me cry. Definitely an adult book though.

Genre: Fantasy
★Title: Silverwing (series of 4 books)
Author:Kenneth Oppel
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: Nymphaea
Description: The Silverwing series of books is a fantasy story telling the story of bats, their gods and beliefs, and in particular the life of Shade, a silverwing bat.
Opinion: Although these books are written for young adults, I still enjoy them today as an adult, as they are quite well written and a joy to read. The fact that the story is about bats gives it an interesting edge against most other stories I've read, the characters aren't people with magic powers or fantasy creatures, but a real species, just with a human-like history and mythology added in. I highly suggest the series to anyone who is a fan of personification stories, fantasy, and especially, bats. If you aren't a bat lover before reading the series, you will most likely be one by the time you finish.

Genre: Fanstasy
★Title: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter series)
Author: J.K. Rowling
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: Agito
Description: I was surprised this wasnt already up. The first book is a really easy read, dedicated to younger readers (grade 3-4+). The basis is that in a regular world, there are people who are wizards - people who can do magic.
Opinion: First few books were really easy reads; as the series progressed, it became more complex. The plot contained more twists, and the books got longer.

Genre: Fantasy
★Title: Carpe Jugulum
Author: Terry Pratchett
Adult or Young Adult: YA (but bordering on A)
Who recommends this: Witchthief
Description: Comedic fantasy in which there are vampires, witches, magic, and little blue men. Really.
Opinion: I love everything by Pratchett, but this is one of my favourites.

----SciFi

Genre: Science fiction
★Title: The Hunger Games
Author: Suzanne Collins
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult, but both can enjoy
Who recommends this: nepenthe
Description: Intense, Futuristic America, Page turner, 1st book in a trilogy
Opinion: Best book i have read in a long time! I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Genre: SciFi/Fantasy
★Title: Black Sun Rising
Author: C.S. Friedman
Adult or Young Adult: Adult
Who recommends this: Nari
Description: Futuristic, Location:Erna, Humans & fae[a force which feeds off emotions], & demons. Damien & Ciani realize that the entire world is in danger.
Opinion: I loved this series! I seriously recommend that you pick it up! It is visually stunning, and one of those books that you just won't be able to put down. I was hooked just reading the prologue and after finishing the first book, I immediately looked for the second and third.

Genre: Sci-fi
★Title: Ender's Game
Author: Orson Scott Card
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: Agito & nepenthe
Description: futuristic society. when you are born, you are hooked up to this machine that screens your thoughts. superior kids go to fleet and space training, where they train to kill an alien species that is supposed to someday try to attack and take over earth.
Ender, is overly superior to others, the book describes his life and how things arnt always so good at top.
Opinion: Its interesting. the plotline is pretty simple, but there are so many small twists and turns, sometimes you miss them.

Genre: Soft Science Fiction
★Title: The Giver
Author: Lois Lowry
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: elaine3305
Description: The book is part of a "loose trilogy" which includes Gathering Blue and Messenger. The novel follows a boy named Jonas through the twelfth year of his life. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan which has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of "Receiver of Memory," the person who stores all the memories of the time before Sameness, in case they are ever needed to aid in decisions that others lack the experience to make. When Jonas meets the previous receiver—the "Giver"—he is confused in many ways. The Giver is also able to break some rules, such as turning off the speaker and lying to people of the community. As Jonas receives the memories from the Giver, he discovers the power of knowledge. The people in his community are happy because they don't know of a better life but the knowledge of what they are missing out on could create chaos.
Opinion: I was very intrigued after reading the book's teaser. The author (and the novel) brought me to a place far from our world in comparison. The different emotions from the "memories" passed on by the "Giver" were etched deep into my heart. I just can't explain the feeling of reading it in words. A very beautiful book indeed.

Genre: Fantasy/Sci Fi
★Title: Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels Trilogy)
Author: Anne Bishop
Adult or Young Adult: Adult
Who recommends this: Fenrisúlfr
Description: First book in The Black Jewels Trilogy. In a three-layered world known as the Realm ruled by the power of birthright jewels given to those called the Blood, with an ancient prophecy foretelling the birth of the Dark Realm's Queen. She who wields more power then even the High lord of Hell himself but is far to young and easy to influence. Enter their world to watch it unfold into chaos or peace.
Opinion: I was hesitant to read this story at first since I'm not one for alternate reality types that change point of views every couple of pages but once I opened the book I did not set it down until I finished the whole book. The emotion behind the characters suck you into their world, make you want to beat someone with a stick at points, and fall in love with their realities. Truly an amazing read.

Genre: Fantasy/Science Fiction
★Title: Dragon Singer
Author: Anne McCaffrey
Adult or Young Adult: Young adult
Who recommends this: LittleSea
Description: An enchanting story about a young, downtrodden girl with an innate talent for music and for training dragons. Its the first of a trilogy, set in a very long book series. After reading this one I suggest reading DragonFlight, the first story set in Anne McCaffrey's dragon world called Pern.
Opinion: It's a classic! One of those all-time favorite forever types.

★Title: The Pillars of the Earth
Author: Ken Follett
Adult or Young Adult: Adult [inappropriate for young readers]
Who recommends this: nepenthe

Opinion: One of my favorite historical novels. It starts of kinda slow but ends great.

Genre: Historical Fiction
★Title: Catherine, Called Birdy
Author: Karen Cushman
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: Mikael Hart
Description: An award-winning novel about a strong-headed and quick-witted young lady in the medieval times who finds creative ways to drive out her potential suitors.
Opinion: A favorite book since high school; very humorous with a likable female protagonist.

Genre: Historical Fiction
★Title: The Book Thief
Author:Markus Zusak
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: corina626, Lilicria, & nepenthe
Description: Young girl steals books in Nazi Germany. Also about her relationship with her foster parents; Death is telling the story of her life, basically. So slight fantasy, mostly historical fiction though; character-based plot again.
Opinion: I loved the book. I couldn't keep my eyes off it. I wished they made a sequel on what happens to the girl after what happens in the end.

Genre: Historical Fiction
★Title: Goddess of Yesterday
Author: Caroline B. Cooney
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: Lilicria
Description: A young girl from a tiny Greek island is sold to a noble as a companion for their ill daughter. Story of her experiences throughout the Trojan War.
Opinion: Awesome. Not the most fast-paced book but again a great character-driven plot. The protagonist is brilliantly strong and courageous and despite her whole life being turned upside down and inside out several hundred times she never whinges about it to the readers - something that made me respect her a lot more. Simple and easy read, but enough emotional investment in the characters that you don't want to stop at the end.

Genre: Historical Fiction
★Title: Song For A Dark Queen
Author: Rosemary Sutcliff
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: Lilicria
Description: Gorgeous retelling of the legendary Queen Boudicca, who led the Iceni and other British tribes against the Romans. Tells about her life prior to the invasion as well as up to her death.
Opinion: Absolutely beautiful writing, the poetry in this book is exceptional and something that stays with me to this day. I've reread this book several times and it still makes me cry; although it's not that emotional

Genre: Historical Fiction
★Title: The Shakespear Stealer
Author: Gary Blackwood
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult
Who recommends this: elaine3305
Description: Fourteen-year-old Widge is an orphan, who doesn't even know his real name. Widge's previous master, a clergyman named Dr. Bright, taught him a shorthand language called charactery, to steal other preachers' sermons. His new master wants to use Widge's shorthand to acquire William Shakespeare's Hamlet, which hasn't been reprinted yet, for himself.
Opinion: This book has taught me about the importance of friendship, trust, and family. And after reading it, I have loved it ever since. Try hunting your bookstores for a copy of this 1998 classic.

----Mystery

Genre: Mystery
★Title: Poirot Investigates
Author: Agatha Christie
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult, I would say.
Who recommends this: Eczilon
Description: A collection of Short Stories featuring Hercule Poirot. Early 20th century England, jewel robbery, murder, abduction, red herring.
Opinion: I may be biased in that I'm a rabid Agatha Christie fangirl, but the cases he solves in Poirot Investigates are brilliant and almost ridiculously difficult to solve on your own.

Genre: Mystery
★Title: Hickory Dickory Dock
Author: Agatha Christie
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult, nothing too violent or gory.
Who recommends this: Eczilon
Description: Early 20th Century England, murder, theft, smuggling, multiple suspects.
Opinion: One of my favourites in the Poirot series. The crimes are so vast that it's difficult to keep track of them all, but in true 'Order and Method' fashion, Poirot solves each theft - and murder - one at a time, wrapping them all up with no loose ends.

Genre: Mystery
★Title: The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern
Author: Lilian Jackson Braun
Adult or Young Adult: Young Adult, could possibly be read by early teens as well
Who recommends this: Eczilon
Description: Cats, Murder, Journalism, Interior Design
Opinion: Very light-hearted, somewhat comedic mystery solved by a cat; oh, have I got your whiskers tingling? Not difficult to solve on your own if you like to do so, and equally as fun to go along 'for the ride'.

Genre: Historical (sort of) Mystery Romance
★Title:Wildthorn
Author:Jane Eagland
Adult or Young Adult:Inbetween really elements of it are more adult but you'd find it in the young adult section
Who recommends this: [Laura Jane]
Description: [Twisting Plot,Dramatic,Amazing,Mistakenly Mad put in horrible asylum]
Opinion: [One of the most amazing and surprising books I've ever read. Wildthorn hall is a place where cruelty and madness meet...]

----Thriller

----Horror

Genre: Gothic Fiction; Horror Fiction
★Title: Interview with the Vampire
Author: Anne Rice
Adult or Young Adult: Adult
Who recommends this: Mikael Hart & nepenthe
Description: "a vampire named Louis tells his 200-year-long life story to a reporter."
Opinion: Rich, dark, romantic, lovely, poetic, exciting, morbid.

Genre: Superhero Romance
★Title: Bigtme Series: Karma Girl, Hot mama, Jinx
Author: Jennifer Estep
Adult or Young Adult: I consider it YA but it's a romance so publisher considers A
Who recommends this: ladywizard
Description: tongue in cheek series about the lives and fallacies of traditional style comic superheroes. Starting with the oh so popular dumped in mutagenic ooze development for the first female hero, a twist on human torch and Ghost Rider for the second, and final book winding up with a storm witch/telekinetic who things blow up on
Opinion: for everyone who shook their head at Superman only needing a pair of glasses this has more than a few comedic moments

Genre: Fantasy/Romance
★Title: Heart's Blood
Author: Juliet Marillier
Adult or Young Adult: Adult
Who recommends this: xtina
Description: It's almost like a Beauty & the Beast story. A young scribe goes to stay with a cursed man who is crippled and surrounded by ghosts. She tries to find a cure for the curse and save everything she holds dear.
Opinion: Lovedddd, this book. Anything by this author is amazing (:
