Hey guys, just wondering if anyone else has seen some really sad anime, OVA, manga series, light novel, visual novel or film that actually made you cry or come close to crying.

I'm actually looking for some that I can watch just because I have some spare time. If you know one that is a tearjerker then comment about it and I will try to watch it.

I'll make a list of the stuff I've seen that I actually found really emotional and almost made my cry, if I remember the name.

The only one that has actually managed to make me cry for a long time in the past 10 years is 5 Centimeters Per Second, if you haven't seen it then you should.

- 5 Centimeters Per Second (my tears didn't stop till after about an hour)
- Little Lord Fauntleroy (Aww this had such a cute story, grew up watching this...I'm not as old as I'm making myself look.)
- Air
- Kannon
- Clannad / Clannad After Story
- Angel Beats
- Fushigi Yuugi
- Chrono Crusade
- Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai
- Ef: A tale of memories / Ef: A Tale of Melodies
- Onegai Teacher / Onegai Twins
- To Heart / To Heart: Remember My Memories /To Heart 2
- Da Capo / Da Capo II: Second Season / Da Capo: If
- Fate/Stay Night
- Mizuiro
- Cowboy Bebop
- Myself; Yourself
- Rumbling Hearts
- Happiness!
- Grave of the Fireflies
- Now and Then, Here and There
- Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
- Black Cat (the manga...)
- Fullmetal Alchemist
- Mahoromatic
- Scrapped Princess
- Code Geass LoR1
- D.Gray-Man
- Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles
- xxxHolic
- Kobato
- Chobits
- Romeo x Juliet
- Blood+
- Rurouni Kenshin
- Death Note
- Claymore
- Fruit Basket
- InuYasha
- Wolf's Rain
- Kamichu!
- Kare Kano
- Love Hina
- Millennium Actress
- Cross†Channel
- Hoshi no Koe
- Excel Saga
- Hanada Shōnen Shi
- Saikano
- Hikaru no go
- Piano: The Melody of a Young Girl's Heart
- Uchuu no Stellvia
- Spirited Away
- Howl's Moving Castle
- Kimi ga Nozomu Eien

I think I'll stop there...You guys can probably already tell that I'm an anime otaku so all I'm going to say is that this is a small fraction of what I've seen.

Ah, the first thing I think of when I see your request is Solanin. I don't know if you've read it, but it's not the most popular manga out there so likely not. It was two books long, but my copy of it has them put together in one book, so it's basically a very long one shot.

Solanin is a slice of life story about a young couple trying to find out what they want to do with their lives. I won't tell you too much so it's not spoiled, but I bawled my eyes out at the end of it. It's an incredibly beautiful story.

Another manga I cried at the end of was Record of a Fallen Vampire. I can't promise you'd cry though, because I know someone else who cried also, as well as someone else who couldn't figure out why the two of us found it enough to cry for XD Matter of opinion on the story I guess. Even if it won't bring you quite to tears, the story is extremely well thought out, and the art is beautiful. If you like the psychological kind of stuff (kind of like in Death Note, though the story concepts are very different), you'll probably like this one.

Ah, I just remembered another one too. Voices of a Distant Star made me cry. Apparently it is a single-episode anime originally, though I've only ever read the manga adaption, so I can't tell you which is better and/or sadder. You may have seen it, I don't know, but it's basically about a teenaged couple who get separated when one of them goes aboard a space mission to another planet. They talk to each other through texts, but as she gets farther into space, the texts take years to reach each other. It was heart-breaking when I read it, but so beautiful.

Hope this helps a bit ^^ Good luck picking out stories to watch/read :D! I'll post again if I remember any more.

I loved most of the ones you've listed

and I'd secondly suggest voices of a distant star even if I play that song it makes me cry

I'm sad to see you don't have Elfen Lied seriously that's a tearjerker.

Grave of the fireflies is another great one; I cried throughout the whole film

If you haven't seen outlaw star you will love it especially the ending that's so sad.

I'm guessing from your username you saw Card Captor Sakura and maybe the 2nd movie that was heartbreaking too.

Ah, yeah I cried all during Grave of the Fireflies too T.T Gosh that was a sad movie.

I'll second Elfen Lied as a tearjerker. That story was incredibly deep. They took a good look a humanity, and it was so sad when they went into the characters. It's probably the most emotional thing I've ever read.

If you haven't already read/watched that one, I suggest the manga over the anime. I've never watched the anime, I couldn't stomach the moving violence, but I spent a lot of time reading up on the series and I've come to the rather strong impression that the anime leaves a whole lot out, and doesn't really capture everything the manga got into. If you want to experience it for it's deep story, then the manga is the way to go in my own opinion.

Though as an otaku there's a very good chance you've already heard about this, I'll pre-warn you anyway that Elfen Lied achieves it's deep story by making it not quite so pretty. There's a lot of violence, nudity and other mature themes. A large percentage of it is really what makes the story what it is, though I have to admit some of it could have been done without... It didn't bother me *too* much when I was reading it, even though I have a kind of weak tolerance for violence, but that's probably closely related to the fact I read instead of watched, so everything was in black and white and stayed still, and the fact I read a bit of a time line on what happens before I read the actual manga, so I was already expecting a few of the worst parts.

If you decide you don't mind all that stuff, then Elfen Lied really is a wonderful tearjerker story.

Off the top of my head, I can suggest Dear Friends.

It has a manga and a live action drama/movie, both made me cry a lot. I know I've seen more tearjerkers that aren't already listed here, but that one left a pretty big impression.

AnoHana, I cried at AnoHana, definitely.

To be honest I don't cry very often and that one was honestly the worse, and it's only 11 episodes long so it'll be quickly seen.

Grave of the Fireflies was like super depressing. I always try to avoid that kind of anime because it stays with me for a long time.
Clannad after story is super sad too.

When I first saw this, my first thought was 07-Ghost. At first, it didn't seem like a tearjerker, but eventually at some point in the anime I bawled twice and after watching the anime, I went straight to the manga. I bawled a few times again reading it. Although after the tearjerking moments, there weren't any more. Or maybe there were, but it was less effective ... Unfortunately, the manga isn't done yet, so I can't really say. But, if you read the doujinshi, created by the same mangaka, I think you might shed a tear or two. I know I did. c:

That was probably the most latest series I've read that made me cry, besides Ao no Exorcist. Other series that made me cry were Code Geass R2 and Angel Beats. I wish I could remember more, but my memory sucks ... xD;;

And I'll definitely try watching/reading some of those on that list~
