Mairen was one of the seven daughters Poseidon treasured. She was fair skinned with long, light pink hair and a stunning blue tail. Mairen was different from her sisters in many respects but the one that angered her father the most was her obsession for the surface. She stole objects from wreckages and she daydreamed about human's far too much for his liking.

Mairen swam further away from Atlantis than anyone else, spoke to the creatures of the deep and held her head above water. She truly was a rebellious princess. Today was no exception, she swam fast away from the prying eyes of her father who had recently gotten angry at her for once again handling surface objects. "Mairen please!" yelled Nir, a small perch fish. Furious, she ignored his plea and continued out closer to the surface.

"He just doesn't understand!" she yelled, "He doesn't... he just doesn't get it." defeated, she stopped swimming and looked towards the sky, sad that she couldn't see it's stars. With a heft sigh, she swam upwards. "Mairen no! You'll get into even more trouble!" the small fish spotted a ship not too far away and panicked. "Mairen come back, it's dangerous! There's a boat!" Her tail flicked happily. "A boat?" She swam up and grabbed his fins, "A real boat?" she grabbed him and swam towards the massive wooden planks that created a dark shadow in the water.

Amazed the human creation, she caressed the ships hull and the barnacles that attached themselves to it. "It's amazing..." the small fish was clearly distressed. "Princess please... there are real humans on that boat. They'll hurt you!" But Mairen paid no attention and instead swam up alongside the vessel, poking her head out of the water ever so slightly, and then slightly more and allowed her eyes to look upon the white sails in all their glory.

Suddenly, a loud bang from above frightened her and she sank back below the waterline. Marvellous colours erupted from the sky in a dazzling display. More began to bang loudly and Mairen dared to pop her head out once more, looking at the beauty of the colourful stars. Below her, Nir was panicking and decided to race back to Atlantis.

The ship sailed on. Sitting one her bed and looking out of the window in one of its cabins was a young princess. Her hair was light blonde and curly, but not because it was normally curly. It was curled with the help of her servant. Her face was heart shaped with just slightly pointy chin, but since the point was soft, it wasn't really noticeable. Even without any makeup, her lips were naturally warm pink, but her skin, made paler than it already was (with only a subtle shade of pink being allowed to remain on her cheeks) with the help of some more makeup made them stand out more. Her most prominent feature, however, were her sea green eyes.

She was wearing a sky blue dress that enveloped her thin waist tightly, only to get wider and wider as it went from her hips to the floor. Though she had worn the corset for quite a while, she still didn't quite get used to it. It was still uncomfortable, but luckily, she didn't have to be squeezed so extremely tight or it would make her way too thin. Being thin was not a sign of royalty, as only poor peasants weren't be able to afford themselves some good food.

All in all, she almost looked like a porcelain doll. But, that was what she was made for, right? She had to be pretty or otherwise, no prince would want her. That was what she was always reminded of. Her beautiful older sister had found a nice husband, pulling their country in a very important alliance. And, the younger sister had to follow in the elder one's footsteps or maybe even surpass her. She sighed and closed her book. It was has gotten a bit too dark for reading like this already.

Her break from the lesson will soon be over and she will have to continue to 'fill her empty head with knowledge' soon. Even on the ship, her education was still not something to neglect. It was understandable, but she still wished to get a small break from it. Another woman soon walked in and lit the candles. "Are you ready to continue, Your Highness?"

However, before the princess got to respond, a loud bang could be heard. Thunder? There won't be a storm, right? She peeked through her window only to see the lightning crack the sky. And then another one. It didn't take long before the first raindrops started falling. The storm was getting ready, after all. Hopefully, it will end before getting too strong.

As the rain fell Mairen plopped back under the water, when under the rain was a beautiful display as it danced above her creating shapes in the sky. But when she rose above, the rain was heavy and it hurt, pelting her with cold bullets and it normally brought thick, black clouds with it. With just her eyes above water, Mairen sighed, making bubbles, and watched as lightning flashed once more, sparking light across the whole ocean.

Thunder and lightning were always scary, but exciting. She could hear voices coming from the ship and shadows were attempting to move the sails and steady the ship. The thunder roared loudly and the shouting became more frenzied, more lightning crack, this time hitting the mast at the very top of the ship, breaking it and sending it plummeting into the water.

Mairen swam back underneath and saw the mast disappearing into the deep, another roar and a flash told her another bolt had hit and an orange light began to shine through the water. Fire Mairen had never seen fire. She peeked up once more, eyes enthralled by the dazzling orange and yellow figures moving around the boat. Humans desperately tried to put it out with water, but she was so excited to see such a display.

Fire was beautiful. It created thick black smoke that ran up into the sky, joining with the thunderous clouds. A splash came from the other side of the boat and Mairen swam under to see what it was. A smaller boat was now in the water, with people rushing to get aboard. Was the big ship sinking? Perhaps there would be new trinkets to discover! New items from the human world were the highlight of her year - constantly researching into what they are and what they would be used for.

Mairen sank back and watched the ship burn from beneath the waves, the orange flames were always out of her reach so she settled for knowing that soon, a whole ship would be down here. A whole new world for her to discover and explore.

The strom was, however getting stronger and stronger with each passing second. Amelie tried her best to concentrate on her lesson, trying to convince herself that it will pass, but a sudden, loud cracking sound made it impossible for her to do so and she had to look through the window again. Her heart skipped a beat and a gasp escaped her lips. The mast! It broke off! Without it, the ship was doomed. And then, to top it off, there was fire... The princess knew by now that the ship was definately going to sink. There was no saving it anymore. Even her teacher who was usually an extremely calm woman, had started panicking.

"Let us hurry up, Your Higness!" she exclaimed and run out of the cabin, pulling Amelie with her. There was no time to save anything, except the book that Amelie was already holding. In any other situation, the woman knew it would be unacceptable for her to do so, but it was a life or dead situation, and she had to save the princess. Both her and her teacher looked around, trying to find a way out. The rain felt just a little lighter than pebbles falling from the sky, but its cold was mixing with the heat of the fire, creating a very unstable temperature. This wasn't happening.

The ship fought the waves and the storm with all it had, but the sea was merciless in a fierce harmony with raging storm. "This way, Your Higness!" the maid exclaimed, catching Amelie's attention. A boat? It was their only chance. The two immediately went towards it, together with desperate sailors, who even started fighting each other to get in, and a few servants. When the first boat was full, it was lowered and then the second ship started filling with everyone who didn't make it to the first one.

Leaving the burning, sinking ship behind, the boat didn't even get far, before a strong wave flipped it over. The real struggle had just begun. Amelie's dress got so heavy with all the water that she wouldn't be able to swim even if she knew how to. She did her best to stay on the surface and grab someone or at least something... anything... But there was nothing she could do, nothing she could grab on to as she was being pulled into the depths. She kept fighting it, but the water was making its way through her mouth and nose. The only thought left in her mind was "Is this how it all ends?"

Mairen watched from below as things got worse and worse for the people above, her heart ached from not being able to help them. There were more smaller boats being pushed into the water, waves getting more and more ferocious with each passing moment. Mairen watched the third boat begin to fill with people and suddenly heard a splash, and felt the ripples of water as something fell in beside her.

Whipping around the young mermaid saw a human woman struggling to reach the surface, she was desperately trying to rescue herself, and other arms reached below to try and grab her - they weren't to make it. Quicker then the lightning above, she swam over to the drowning figure and grabbed it. Using all of her strength she swam hard to the shoreline, fighting the currents and waves of the harsh sea. The human was clearly struggling and so Mairen risked jumping out of the water, much like a dolphin, in order to get some air.

Time seemed to blue and suddenly Mairen found herself struggling to pull the body up onto the sand. It was extremely heavy and she only managed to drag it a little ways up the beach, so water still lapped around the human's legs. There was no one around, so Mairen took the chance to study the figure, it was a woman - a beautiful woman with delicate features and her hair was light like the sand beneath it. Mairen noticed the intricate clothes she was wearing and figured the fabric is what made her so heavy. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the woman didn't open her eyes.

Mairen had checked for breathing and the woman's chest was rising steadily, but she just wasn't waking up. Mairen stroked her hair and removed it from her face, admiring the woman deeply. She was truly stunning. Feeling lost in trance, Mairen continued to stroke her hair and began to sing a lullaby. Sweetly and softly she started, singing a melody that often took audiences by storm, she sang with passion as she fell deeper and deeper into this human's arms, wanting her to wake and to hold her.

Suddenly, a distant shout caught Mairen's attention and she darted back into the ocean, escaping from any prying eyes. She risked peeking up to see what the noise was, and to see if she could go back up. More shouts were heard, and they seemed closer, so Mairen retreated for now - going back home to make sure her father wasn't organising a search party.

The deeper she sank, the more of her consciousness Amelie lost. It was so unreal. All of those hands reaching into the sea, desperately trying to get ahold of her were so far away and all the panicked voices on the surface were silenced by the water that would soon become her grave. She could no longer see anything. The last of her commoon sense told her that it will be over soon. Just a little bit... and then it will all be over. Her eyes closed. She wasn't aware of her surroundings anymore, so it wasn't surprising that she couldn't even feel comforting arms wrapping around her in an attempt to save her.

She wasn't sure how much time had passed before she could hear a song in her half awake state. Oh, such a beautiful song it was! She knew that she wasn't threatened anymore. It made her feel safe and filled her with bliss. Was she dead? Was it an angel that sang to her? The voice was out of this world, so that would be the only reasonable explanation. But on the other hand, the voice started something inside of her. She felt... alive. How was that possible? She wouldn't be able to survive that, right?

And yet, she could feel the air entering her lungs, pushing some of the water out and causing her to caugh. She opened her eyes, trying to see her saviour. In a haze, she managed to see a woman. With pink hair and a tail. Without thinking, she raised her hand in her direction, trying to ask, no to beg her to stay, but it fell back down before she was able to even open her mouth. She didn't even get to make sense of what she just saw before she passed out again.

"The princess! It's her! It's really her!" familiar voice shouted. She was soon surrounded by a bunch of people, even though she couldn't see, nor hear a single person. Her maid put her head on her chest and then looked at others. "She is alive!" she informed them. The princess' teacher almost joined her on the floor out of relief, but the sailors grabbed her before she fell.

Mairen swan fast and hard, trying to calm the pounding in her chest. Not only had she raised her head above the surface but she had touched and rescued a human woman! Then she sat by her, helped her and admired her, even sang to her, a blush crept upon her cheeks and she tried to shake it away. She had never swam so fast in her life as she returned home to a few irritating sisters and an angry father.

"Where have you been?" he stormed, stopping her in her tracks and placing a large, dominating hand in front of her. Mairen refused to let him know, "I - I found a wreckage far from here and was exploring it." she lied. Poseidon fumed, "A wreckage? I told you not to got there! Your obsession with the surface is unhealthy and will get you killed!" He was clearly very angry and Mairen had no choice but to say, "Yes, Father" and she sadly went to her room - well, that's what she wanted him to believe.

Instead she escaped to her secret cave where she hid her surface objects, all of the different and unique. Being here made her feel at ease, and she could lay back and look at the patterns above her as the danced in the water. She picked up a small object, a odd container of sorts with a handle at one end. Was it some kind of hat? Ah, if only she could find out what it was - her mind wandered to the lady of the beach and Mairen wondered if she was okay. Her chest tightened again, and she wanted to meet her.

The next time she opened her eyes, Amelie was lying in a warm and comfortable bed in an unknown room, with a damp cloth on her forehead. Since she wasn't wearing her corset at the moment, her exhausted lungs could spread as much as they needed to, thus allowing her to finally breathe normally. Her maid was in the room as well, and she looked really relieved that she woke up. "How are you feeling, Your Highness?" she asked in a worried voice. "W-water," she begged. Her dry throat was burning so much.

The maid nodded and immediately took a glass of water from the nightstand. She supported Amelie's head with one hand and carefully gave her water with the other one. As soon as she drank some, Amelie lied down again. "Thank you," she said quietly. Helping her quench her thirst was equal to helping her stop the arranged wedding that she had to be a part of in Amelie's mind right now. She was still feeling weak and tired.

But even so... she was alive. She thought she was really going to die when that storm started sinking the ship. And now, she was here. How did she even survive? She remembered the blue fishlike tail and long pink hair. That was the person that saved her, right? No, she must have seen something wrong though. She was barely conscious at that time, after all. There was no way mermaids existed. And that one of them saved her.

And yet, she could still hear that wonderful song that made her heart skip a beat whenever she remembered it. Oh, if only she could thank her savior. But, who was she? "Claire..." she called. "Yes, Your Higness?" the maid asked. "Do you think... that the angels exist?"

The sea was particularly calm as Mairen looked up and felt comfortable in her little treasure trove. Her small human objects surrounded her and they made her so happy. There were strange objects that made sound, some that looked similar to some of the fish in the deep. They were all beautiful and unique and Mairen held each one close to her heart. Suddenly a small voice interrupted her and she spun round to meet with a familiar fishy face, "What are you doing here, little guy?" but before the small guppy could answer, a dark shadow loomed over and her father appeared, trident in hand. He shouted at her, screamed at her and destroyed her most precious possessions. He grabbed her arm and hurt her, so Mairen did the only thing she was good at... and flee.

She swam and swam until her body was too tired to move any more. She finally stopped, and cried. She cried and cried and screamed in anger and in sadness. Suddenly, a hiss made her stop and an electric eel wrapped around her, joined by it's sibling. "Why are you crying, Princess?" one asked, "Princess why are you sad?" Mairen sobbed and told the eels that her father has ruined everything she had loved. "Oh Princess how unfortunate" one said, "Very unfortunate" the other added. "But we know someone who can help you." The first said, "Yes she will make your wished come true", both eels snickered and beckoned Mairen to follow them.

So she did. And with no regrets she followed the eels to a dark cave that was surrounded by kelp and seaweed, by corpses of dead fish and barnacles. It was disturbing and Mairen took a few deep breath to compose herself.Upon entering, she was greeted by a powerful, melodic voice. "My dear," it spoke, "Oh how I have waited for this day" a female emerged from the shadows, with thick black tentacles and wiry hair, the Sea Witch, Thira appeared. "I have seen your agony, princess, your father doesn't understand you and he's taken away everything you loved" she slithers behind Mairen and wrapped her tentacles around her, "I feel your pain. I can help you. Trust in me and I will give you the one thing you desire. LEGS" Mairen gasped and shook herself free.

"You can do that? You can give me legs?" The sea witch laughed, "Of course! I could give you anything you desired for a price" Mairen was unsure, but the temptation was too strong, "What price? What do I pay you?" The Sea witch brought up a shell and made it glow, "Your voice, my dear" Mairen grabbed her throat every inch of her body was saying no, but she held out her hand, and the witch pricked her finger in order to sign the contract.

"No my dear, sing for me!" Mairen sang hard and loud, watching as a strange light emitted all around her and a burning sensation crept up her throat. Soon, the witch performed more magic and her tail began to split in two, Mairen tried to scream in pain but nothing came out. The more she tried to talk the more painful it got until it was unbearable and she passed out. Now human, she would die if she didn't breathe air so the witch ordered her two eels to drag her to the surface and leave her there to either die or get found by humans.

After some time, having regained a big part of her usual strength Amelie was feeling a lot better. The doctor said that she should not do anything that would get her too excited or exhaust her and to get enough rest. However, she still wasn't allowed to leave her bed for at least a day, maybe even more if the doctor decided that it was necessary. She wasn't happy about that. She was in an unknown castle and she didn't know a single thing about it, other than the fact that it belonged to her future husband's father.

Luckily for Amelie, her loyal maid was next to her, keeping her company. And reading was still not fobidden in her state if she didn't do it too much. Even her parents visited to check on her! That brightened her mood up at first, but she was soon feeling bad again, as they seemed to care about her wedding and the new alliance just slightly less than they cared about her well being. That was a little sad. But she knew better than to neglect her duties as a princess. There were a lot of people that depended on her.

In the mean time, the princess' teacher was taking a small walk, together with her own maid. Since the princess wasn't feeling well and continuing her studies at a moment like this was out of question, she had some free time that she decided to spend on the beach. The place where her student was found. Alive. It was God himself that made the terrifying sea spare her, so she wanted to pray there. So the Lord would know how grateful she is.

As the two women walked, they soon noticed a naked young girl lying near the sea that would occassionaly caress her back. It was as if she had washed ashore. Maybe another ship sank as well and she was a survivor? What surprised them the most was a colour of her hair, but they didn't give it much thought just yet. Kneeling next to her, they noticed her chest rising, indicating that she is still alive. "Mabel, go and get some help" the teacher ordered. As the maid ran off, the teacher looked back at the girl. She took her hand. "Can you hear me?" She realized that she has her coat on, so she pulled her out of the reach of the waves, took it off used it to cover her, both to protect her from the cold and to hide her nudity.
